Creating Your Career Makeover With Cosmetology Training

Cosmetology Training

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that men and women hold an average of about 14 jobs by the time they turn 40. Jobs changes tend to occur more frequently during the beginning of a persons job history. Americans averaged 10 jobs between the ages of 18 and 34 according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (April 2002) and that number has gone up to 14 jobs in 2008. In todays ever-changing global economy and increasing rate of technological advances, career change is an inevitable fact of life.

Career change is also not just relevant for those at the beginning or middle of their working life. Career change is also now a part of the end-game when it comes to retirement planning for those 50 years of age and older. A third of workers age 50 to 64 now plan to work five years or more longer than they previously expected, according to human resources consultant Towers Watson, which based the results of its retirement-funding survey on a poll of 9,080 people conducted in May and June of this year. Putting off retirement due to financial concerns, the need for health care benefits, and the increasing cost of living has left many fifty-somethings looking for a career makeover just like those in their 20s but for different reasons.

Whether you are just starting out in the job market or looking to retire from it, the reality of todays marketplace is that at some point you will want to or have to make a change. The field of Cosmetology appeals to many seeking a career change because of its flexibility and the universal demand for beauty services. A recent occupational survey found that 44% of all barbers, cosmetologists, hair stylists, and others working in the personal care industry are self-employed. The flexibility of self-employment is appealing to many because of the ability to set your own hours and choose your work setting and location. In terms of demand for those with cosmetology skills, job growth in the beauty industry will grow by 20 percent from 2008 to 2018, much faster than the average for all other occupations.

It is estimated by those that study career change that it takes on average two to six years to successfully complete a career change. This can be a problem for those who cannot afford the time or cost of making a career switch. In comparison, a career change to cosmetology can often be done in less than a year which includes training at a school of cosmetology, apprenticeship and licensing. Many cosmetology training programs also provide job and career placement services to help graduates land their first job. In fact, many have developed relationships with local salons and beauty establishments because they are mutually beneficial for both school and employer. The employer knows the quality of students they produce and can be assured of getting well-trained and qualified candidates to fill their open positions.

Career change can be a planned for or unplanned event in someones journey through life. A career in Cosmetology is an attractive option for making a career change because of the growing demand for beauty services and the flexibility it offers in combining work life with todays lifestyles.
